Overview of Lessons
Two of the gospel writers, Matthew and Luke, wanted to affirm Jesus’ connection with the house of Jesse as a testament to Jesus as the Messiah. Both gospels delineate family trees, which have become known as the Jesse Tree. Matthew’s initial audience was Jewish; he traced the family ancestry back to Abraham, the man who made the first covenant with God. Luke’s audience was gentile; he traces the family ancestry back to Adam and the Son of God as a universal ancestor.
