Overview of the Jesse Tree Unit

Cornerstones offers eleven workshops for each unit including the Jesse Tree Unit shown below. See types of our rotation workshops. See also our full catalog.

Bedouin Encampment: Hear Jesse's story and learn of Jesus' genealogical roots. Create a weaving that will contain symbols of the many people in Jesse's lineage.

Bible @ Your Fingertips: Look up key verses using both a hard copy and software version of the Bible. Look up the words Messiah and Isaiah in the Bible Dictionary. Explore the map in the Bible Atlas that shows the borders of the United Kingdom, the nations of Israel and Judah, the exile and today's borders. Compare the genealogies listed in Matthew and Luke. Create bookmarks of a person in the Jesse Tree.

Bible Improv: Act out stories from the lives of the people on the Jesse Tree discovering how these people create Jesus' family tree. Consider people in their own lives who share character traits similar to the people on the Jesse Tree.

Created by the Spirit: Chose a person on the Jesse Tree and create a symbol for that person. These symbols will become a decoration on a tree you create.

Eat Your Way through the Bible: The creation of a traditional French Christmas dessert – Buche de Noel – will help the class remember the story of Jesse and how the Messiah came from this humble beginning.

Faith Today: Create a Church History Tree with the ancestors of Jesus in the roots and Christian denominations as the leaves. Briefly explore their own denomination and local church history.

Mary & Martha's Bed & Breakfast: Hear from Rahab, the great-great grandmother of David who greeted the Hebrews as they entered Canaan after their Wilderness experience. Make a root vegetable salad to symbolize the root of Jesse.

Moved by the Spirit: Create family groupings and a time line for some of the names in the Jesse Tree. Play a game of checkers on a human scale, with callers who tell their classmates (names from the Jesse Tree) where to move on the board.

Puppetry: Enact a puppet show to illustrate the book, Knots on a Counting Rope. This story is a Native American tale of the value of passing the family stories on to the next generation.

Video Live!: Learn about the term Messiah and the Jesse Tree. Create a family picture album, portraying sixteen members of the Jesse Tree.

Where in the World?: Look at roots in the rain forest to see how important they are and how they can be a symbolic connection to the Jesse Tree. Either take cuttings from plants or prepare bulbs to be forced and shared with members of the congregation.
